Pretty Bay Beach

Exploring Pretty Bay Beach in Malta

Pretty Bay is one of Malta’s popular sandy beaches.  Located in the small seaside town of Birżebbuġa.  In the southeastern part of Malta.  This bay is one of the few sandy beaches found in the south of Malta.  Known for its light sand and azure clear waters.  It is a favourite spot for both locals and tourists visiting the Maltese islands.

Pretty Bay has an interesting history.  Birżebbuġa is situated along a rocky coast.  In the past, the shore was not as sandy as it is today.  The beach got its sand during the construction of the Malta International Freeport.  This led to the deposition of sand from the seabed to the beach.  Making the bay larger and spacious.  Thus, Pretty Bay is a man-made beach.

Things to Do at Pretty Bay Beach

Swimming is very popular, especially in the summer months.  The water is warm and clean.  The Mediterranean sea is warm enough from mid-June till mid-October.  At the peak of Summer, the sea temperature is around 26oC. Lifeguards are often on duty to ensure safety.

People need to consider that this beach is situated close to a busy port.  The Malta Freeport is a large container port.  The only one in Malta that handles cargo ships.  This large industrial facility is visible from any part along the coast.  So it will be part of your view.  You must also bear with the noise coming from the loading and unloading of containers.  Yet, it can be interesting to watch large ships entering the port.  Unloading their cargo and exiting to open seas.  On a positive note the port does act as a shelter to the bay.  It protects it from rough seas.
