What do you need to Work in Malta?

All non-EU residents termed at Third Country Nationals (TCN’s).  Need to apply for a visa and a single work permit to work and live in Malta.  The prospective employer of a TCN is to apply for a permit.

Malta has three types of work permits.  These being:

Single Permit

This permit allows the holder to live and work in Malta.  To apply you must have an offer of employment from a Maltese employer.  The Maltese employer applies on behalf of the TCN if the applicant is still in his home country.  Processing time takes 2 to 3 months.

Once authorised the applicant is issued with an e-residence card.  This card is valid for one year.  It authorises the person to live and work in Malta.  At this stage the applicant can travel to Malta.  Applicants who need a visa can use this authorisation document to get a visa.

The e-residence card is bound to the employer.  That whose contract of employment was included with the application.  If the employee falls out of employment with that employer then the card is no longer valid.

Key Employee Initiative

Skilled TCNs who wish to work in Malta can apply for this work permit.  This application is open to managerial or highly-technical posts. A prospective employee who has the qualifications and experience related to the job can apply for this permit.  Certain conditions need to be met by prospective applicants.  One of these is that the applicant needs to earn a salary of at least €30,000.  The application is processed in around 5 days. 

EU Blue Card

This permit is offered to highly-skilled non-EU citizens.  The applicant must earn at least 1.5 times the average gross annual salary in Malta.  Provide proof that the job requires highly-skilled individuals.  This permit has a validity period of one year but can be renewed for an indefinite period.  The permit is not withdrawn if the applicant’s employment is terminated.  Yet, the permit is withdrawn if termination occurs more than once.  Or the applicant remains unemployed for three consecutive months.

Malta’s Standard of Living

Malta benefits from Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm summers.  It is one of the sunniest places in Europe.
