Valletta is Malta’s beautiful capital city.  Home to many historic sites, lively streets and breathtaking views.  While the city is known for its culture, it’s also a key hub for modern life in Malta.  One of the most important places for both locals and tourists is the Valletta Bus Station.  Whether you’re a traveller trying to explore the island or a resident commuting to work.  This bus station plays a crucial role in your journey.

In this article, we’ll take an in-depth look at the Valletta Bus Station.  From its location and history to its role in Malta’s public transportation system.

Where is the Valletta Bus Station?

The Valletta Bus Station is located outside the main entrance to the city.  Near the Triton Fountain along the city walls.  This central area offers easy access to Valletta’s main streets and attractions.

Among locals it is also known as the Valletta Bus Terminus.  It is the main transport hub in Malta.  Serving routes that cover the entire island.  Whether you want to visit the famous beaches in the north, or the historic towns in the south.  Or anywhere between, you’ll likely pass through this station.

A Bit of History: How Valletta Bus Station Evolved

Valletta’s bus station has been an integral part of Malta’s transport system for many decades.  Before modern transportation, the primary means of travel was walking.  Along with horse-drawn carriages, known in  Maltese as ‘karozzini’.  As Malta modernised, the demand for a structured bus system grew.  Valletta’s location made it a natural choice for a central station.

The first buses on the Maltese islands began running in 1905.  Known for their bright colours and unique designs.  These buses were each painted by their local drivers.  Making every bus distinctive in its decoration.  Owned by the drivers themselves.  These classic buses soon became iconic symbols of Malta.  Adding a nostalgic, cultural charm to the island’s streets.

The Valletta Bus Station has undergone many changes over the years.  In 2011, a significant regeneration project transformed the station at Valletta’s entrance.  Making it more organised and easier to navigate.  Today, the Valletta Bus Station is clean, modern and functional.  Yet, the old terminal holds a special place in the hearts of Maltese people.  Especially those who fondly remember the colourful buses.

Around the same period, Malta restructured its bus network.  Introducing modern, low-floor and air-conditioned buses to enhance efficiency.  To cater to the island’s growing population and tourism.  This update increased both the number of buses and routes available.  Though the new operator faced criticism for several issues.

As a result, Malta’s bus network was nationalised on January 1, 2014.  As a temporary solution until a new operator could be found.  The service was rebranded as Malta Public Transport.  A new operator officially took over on January 8, 2015, keeping the brand name.  Today, the fleet includes over 400 buses that are environmentally friendly and comfortable.

How Does the Valletta Bus Station Work?

The Valletta Bus Station might feel overwhelming at first.  But it’s straightforward once you understand the layout.  The station is divided into several bays or platforms.  Each serving buses to different parts of the island.  Follow the signs to find each bay, as the clear, informative signage makes it easy to locate the right bus.  Information boards display bus numbers, routes and departure times.  An information desk is available for help with route or bay numbers.

Malta has an extensive bus network.  With buses running from early morning (5:30 am) until late at night (11:00 pm).  With more frequent services during peak hours, especially on popular routes.  On weekends and public holidays, buses may follow a reduced schedule.  So it’s best to check the timetable in advance.  Certain routes also offer night services.  Daily in the Summer and on Fridays and Saturdays during Winter.

Malta’s bus routes are numbered, making it easy to find the bus you need.  Most routes numbered from 1 to 99 connect to and from Valletta.  While routes from 100 to 200 generally connect other localities, with some exceptions.  In Gozo, buses are numbered in the 300s, with the main hub located in Victoria.

Bus stops are close to each other, so you’re never far from one.  Buses announce the next stop through an audio system.  Each bus has an electronic display showing upcoming stops.  Bus stops also have a panel listing the routes and a timetable for all the services stopping there.

Tickets and Fares

Public transport in Malta is both cheap and reliable.  Buses are the only form of public transport.  They’re easily recognized by their white and lime green colour.

Tickets are reasonably priced, making buses an ideal option for budget-conscious travellers.  You can buy a single ticket from the bus driver or choose a prepaid card, which offers discounts on regular fares.

Single journey tickets are valid for two hours.  Allowing you to transfer between buses within this period without purchasing another ticket.  The daytime fare is €2.50 and the nighttime fare is €3.00.  Tickets can be purchased in cash from the driver, so it’s best to have the correct change!  Occasional users can also buy a 12 Single Day Journey card for €21, which reduces the cost per ride.

Tourists have two card options.  The Explore Flex Card, which costs €6.00.  This works as a pay-as-you-go card with reduced rates on buses and other transport.  Or the Explore Card, which allows unlimited travel for seven days.  The Explore Card is perfect for travellers who want to explore the island.  It costs €25.00 for adults and €7.00 for children.
